10 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Moissanite Engagement Ring
Buying an engagement ring is one of the most emotionally and financially significant purchases most people make. Moissanite makes premium-looking jewelry accessible at a fraction of the cost of diamond — but only if you buy the right stone from the right source.
Our gemology team has identified the 10 questions that separate confident, informed buyers from those who end up disappointed. Work through each one before you commit.
1. What Is the Cut Grade of This Specific Stone?
Cut is the single most important factor in a moissanite's visual performance — more important than color or clarity. An Excellent cut moissanite will outperform a Very Good cut stone of higher color grade every time.
Ask for the cut grade explicitly. If the retailer can't provide it, or if the certificate doesn't specify it, treat that as a red flag.

2. What Color Grade Am I Actually Getting?
Moissanite color grades run from D (colorless) through K and beyond. D–F is the colorless range; G–I is near-colorless. In white gold or platinum settings, D–F is strongly recommended. In yellow or rose gold, G–H can be a smart, cost-saving choice.
Don't accept "colorless" as an answer. Ask for the specific letter grade.

3. Does the Stone Come With a Certificate, and Can I Verify It?
A reputable moissanite should come with a GRA certificate (or Charles & Colvard certificate for Forever One stones). More importantly, you should be able to verify that the certificate matches the stone you're receiving — not a stock certificate attached to a different stone.
Ask your retailer how they cross-check certificates against their inventory. At Moissanite Shine, every GRA certificate is verified against our team's independent assessment.

4. What Metal Is the Setting, and Is It Solid or Plated?
"Gold" can mean solid 14K gold, solid 18K gold, gold-filled, or gold-plated — and the difference in durability and long-term appearance is enormous. Plated settings will wear through within 1–3 years of daily wear, exposing base metal underneath.
Always confirm: solid or plated? If plated, what is the base metal? What is the plating thickness?

5. What Is the Retailer's Return and Exchange Policy?
Engagement ring purchases should come with a meaningful return window — at minimum 30 days, ideally longer. Understand whether the policy covers full refund, store credit only, or exchange only. Understand restocking fees if any apply.
A retailer confident in their product quality offers generous return terms. Restrictive policies are often a signal about product confidence.
6. Does the Ring Come With a Warranty, and What Does It Cover?
A lifetime warranty on a moissanite stone is meaningful because moissanite is rated 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale and should not chip or scratch under normal wear. A warranty that covers the stone's brilliance and structural integrity is a genuine commitment.

7. Have I Confirmed Her Ring Size Accurately?
Ring sizing is one of the most common post-purchase complications. A ring that's too small can't always be sized up without structural compromise. A ring that's too large is a security and comfort issue.
Don't guess. Use one of the verified methods for finding her size without spoiling the surprise.

8. How Long Will Delivery Take, and Does That Fit My Timeline?
Custom and made-to-order moissanite rings can take 2–6 weeks. If you have a proposal date in mind, work backward from that date and confirm production and shipping timelines before ordering.
Don't assume standard e-commerce delivery speeds apply to jewelry.

9. How Does This Stone Look in Different Lighting?
Moissanite performs differently across lighting environments. Under diffuse indoor light it produces brilliant white return. In direct sunlight or under spotlights it produces strong rainbow fire. Some buyers love this; others prefer diamond's subtler fire profile.
If possible, view the stone under multiple lighting conditions before committing. If buying online, ask the retailer for video footage in both indoor and outdoor light.

10. Am I Buying From a Retailer I Can Actually Trust?
This is the most important question, and the hardest to answer objectively when you're in research mode. Look for: transparent grading standards, independent quality inspection (not just supplier certificates), a real return policy, accessible customer service, and verifiable reviews.
Ask the retailer directly: who inspects your stones, and how? A retailer with an in-house gemology team will answer that question in detail. One without will give you a vague answer about "quality standards."
