Yes — and at Moissanite Shine, upgrading your stone is a planned part of the ownership experience, not an afterthought. Many couples start with a stone that fits their current budget and upgrade on a significant anniversary to a larger or different configuration. This guide explains how the process works, what to expect, and how to plan for it.
Why Upgrade?
The most common reasons couples upgrade their moissanite stone include: wanting a larger stone after the initial budget constraint is no longer a factor; changing aesthetic preferences over time (from round to oval, solitaire to halo); a desire to mark a significant milestone (5th, 10th, 25th anniversary); and wanting to move from a starter ring purchased quickly to a more considered, custom design.
Upgrading is not an admission that the original ring was wrong — it is a natural evolution of a piece of jewelry that grows with your life.
How the Moissanite Shine Lifetime Upgrade Program Works
Our Lifetime Upgrade Program allows you to apply the value of your original stone toward a new stone of equal or greater size. The process:
- Contact us with your original order details and what you have in mind for the upgrade.
- We assess the current stone and confirm its condition and original grade.
- We apply the agreed value toward your new stone selection.
- We set the new stone in your existing setting (if it accommodates the new size) or design a new setting to your specification.
- We return your upgraded ring — or, if you are near us, you can collect in person.
Upgrades can be stone-only (same setting, larger stone) or complete redesigns (new stone, new setting, new metal). The program has no expiry — it is genuinely lifetime.
What Can Be Upgraded
- Stone size: Any size increase is possible. Common upgrades are from 1ct to 2ct, or 1.5ct to 2.5ct.
- Stone shape: Switching from round to oval, cushion to pear, or any other shape change is fully supported.
- Setting: A solitaire can be upgraded to a halo, pavé band, or three-stone design.
- Metal: 14K gold can be upgraded to 18K or platinum as part of a setting redesign.
What Cannot Be Upgraded to a Different Stone Type
The upgrade program applies to moissanite-to-moissanite upgrades. If you wish to move to a different gemstone type (lab diamond, sapphire, etc.), that is a separate purchase rather than an upgrade — though we are happy to assist with that process too.
Planning for an Upgrade from the Start
If you are considering a starter ring now with an upgrade in mind later, a few planning principles help:
- Choose a setting style you genuinely love, not just one that accommodates future resizing. Settings can be changed at upgrade time.
- Keep your GRA certificate and original order documentation — these are needed to verify the original stone's grade at upgrade time.
- Consider a setting with a removable stone rather than a bezel if you know you may want to upgrade, as prong settings are easier to re-set.
The Bottom Line
Your moissanite ring is not a fixed, final object — it can grow with you. Starting with what you can afford now and upgrading later is a completely rational, well-supported approach. The stone you wear today is real, beautiful, and certified. The stone you upgrade to later will be built on top of that foundation.
