Does Moissanite Come in Natural Colors? The Truth About Color in Silicon Carbide

Does Moissanite Come in Natural Colors? The Truth About Color in Silicon Carbide - Moissanite Shine

Moissanite is available in multiple colors — but the term "natural colors" requires a precise answer, because moissanite sold in jewelry is always lab-grown, and its color is determined by the production process. Here is the complete, honest picture of moissanite color: what exists naturally, what is produced in labs, and what you can actually buy.

Natural Moissanite Color

Natural moissanite — silicon carbide found in meteorites and certain rare geological formations — is virtually always dark. Natural SiC crystals are typically black, dark green, or very dark grey. They are opaque or near-opaque, and have no gemological value. Natural gem-quality moissanite in any color does not exist in quantities sufficient for jewelry use. Every moissanite sold in jewelry is laboratory-grown.

Lab-Grown Moissanite Colors

In the laboratory, moissanite crystal growth can be controlled to produce different colors. The commercially available color categories are:

Colorless (DEF Grade)

The most sought-after color grade — equivalent to diamond grades D, E, and F. These stones appear completely colorless to the eye and under most lighting conditions. DEF moissanite is what Moissanite Shine uses exclusively. The absence of color allows the stone's optical properties (brilliance and fire) to express fully without any tinting effect.

Near-Colorless (GHI Grade)

Equivalent to diamond grades G, H, and I. These stones may show a very faint warmth — a subtle yellow or grey tint — under certain lighting conditions or against a white background. In yellow gold settings, this tint is generally invisible. Near-colorless moissanite is less expensive than DEF and is a reasonable choice for certain setting metals and buyer preferences.

Fancy Colors

Through controlled introduction of trace elements and modified growth conditions, moissanite can be produced in a range of fancy colors including: yellow and champagne, green, blue, grey, and black. These are genuine silicon carbide stones with the same hardness and durability as colorless moissanite, but with a different optical character.

Fancy color moissanite is produced by several manufacturers and is available through specialist retailers. The color is introduced during the growth process, not through surface coating — meaning it is stable and permanent.

What You Cannot Get

Moissanite is not naturally available in pink, red, or purple through standard SiC growth processes. Some sellers offer "pink moissanite" — this is either a surface coating (which will wear off) or a misrepresentation. Genuine pink or red SiC does not exist as a commercially produced gem-quality material. If you want a pink stone, genuine pink sapphire, pink lab ruby, or pink lab spinel are more appropriate choices.

Color Stability

Lab-grown moissanite color is permanently embedded in the crystal structure — it does not change, fade, or react to light, heat, or chemicals under normal jewelry-wear conditions. There is a persistent myth that moissanite "turns yellow" over time. This is false — a DEF colorless moissanite will remain colorless indefinitely. The myth originates from early-generation moissanite (pre-2012) that used less refined production methods and occasionally showed color under certain lighting. Modern DEF moissanite does not exhibit this behaviour.

What Moissanite Shine Offers

Every stone at Moissanite Shine is DEF colorless — the highest available color grade, documented on each stone's GRA certificate. We do not offer coated stones or near-colorless grades. If you are looking for fancy color moissanite, we are happy to discuss sourcing options for specific requests.
