How Moissanite Color Grading Works

Moissanite color is graded on a scale adapted from the GIA diamond color scale, running from D (completely colorless) to K and beyond (noticeable warmth). The grades are grouped into categories:

DEF — Colorless: The highest color tier. A DEF moissanite appears completely colorless to the naked eye in all lighting conditions. Under magnification, there may be the faintest trace of color, but face-up in a ring setting, it looks perfectly white and brilliant.

GH — Near Colorless: A GH moissanite has a very faint warmth — a slight yellow or grey tint that is not visible to most people in normal viewing conditions, but may be noticeable when compared directly to a DEF stone or when set in a white metal (platinum or white gold).

IJ — Faint Color: A noticeable warmth that is visible to most people without magnification. Not recommended for white metal settings.

The Visual Difference in Real Life

The honest answer: most people cannot tell the difference between DEF and GH moissanite when looking at a ring in normal conditions. The difference becomes more apparent in two situations:

Direct comparison: When a DEF and GH stone are placed side by side in identical settings under the same lighting, the DEF stone looks crisper and whiter. The GH stone has a subtle warmth by comparison.

White metal settings: In platinum or white gold settings, the metal's cool white color makes any warmth in the stone more apparent. A GH stone in a white gold setting may show a slight contrast between the warm stone and the cool metal. In yellow gold or rose gold settings, this contrast disappears entirely — the warm metal complements the stone's warmth, and GH looks just as beautiful as DEF.

Which Color Grade Should You Choose?

Choose DEF if: You are setting the stone in platinum or white gold, you prefer the crispest, most colorless appearance possible, you are buying a larger stone (2ct+) where any color is more visible, or you simply want the best available grade.

Choose GH if: You are setting the stone in yellow gold or rose gold (where the warmth is invisible), you are working with a tighter budget and want to allocate more to size or metal quality, or you prefer a slightly warmer, more vintage-inspired look.

DEF moissanite commands a premium over GH moissanite — typically 10–20% depending on the size and supplier.
