The Color Grading Scale: Where DEF Sits
Moissanite color is graded on a scale adapted from the GIA diamond color grading system. The scale runs from D (completely colorless) through Z (light yellow or brown). In practice for moissanite:
- DEF (Colorless): Completely colorless under all lighting conditions. No detectable tint in white gold, yellow gold, or platinum settings. The highest color grade available.
- GH (Near-Colorless): Very faint warmth detectable under direct comparison with a colorless stone, but effectively colorless in most real-world settings. Particularly suitable for yellow or rose gold settings where any warmth blends with the metal tone.
- IJ (Faint Color): A visible warmth under standard viewing conditions. Beautiful in its own right and significantly less expensive, but visibly distinct from colorless under most lighting.

What Causes Color in Moissanite?
Moissanite is silicon carbide (SiC) — a compound of silicon and carbon atoms arranged in a tetrahedral crystal lattice. In a chemically pure silicon carbide crystal, there are no impurities to absorb specific wavelengths of light — so all visible light passes through or reflects without selective absorption. The stone appears colorless.
Color in moissanite arises from two sources:
1. Nitrogen impurities: If nitrogen atoms substitute for carbon atoms in the crystal lattice during growth, they absorb blue light wavelengths and transmit yellow — creating a yellow tint. This is the same mechanism that causes yellow color in Type Ia diamonds.
2. Crystal growth conditions: Temperature gradients, growth rate variations, and atmospheric composition during PVT (Physical Vapor Transport) crystal growth can introduce structural defects that create color centers — sites that absorb specific light wavelengths and produce a color tint, typically yellow-green in moissanite.
Early moissanite (pre-2010) frequently showed a noticeable yellow-green tint under certain lighting — a limitation of the initial PVT growth process. Modern DEF-color moissanite is produced using refined growth conditions that minimize both nitrogen incorporation and structural defects to produce fully colorless crystals.
Why Color Matters More in Some Settings Than Others
The visibility of color in a gemstone is strongly influenced by the metal setting surrounding it:
White gold and platinum settings: These highly reflective white metals provide a neutral background that makes any color in the stone immediately visible. DEF color is strongly recommended for moissanite white gold engagement rings and moissanite platinum rings. A GH stone in a white metal setting will show its warmth more visibly than the same stone in yellow gold.
Yellow gold settings: Yellow gold’s warm tone complements and partially masks the warmth in GH-color stones. A GH moissanite in a 14K yellow gold moissanite ring may appear effectively colorless because the metal and stone tones harmonize. DEF color in yellow gold is not wrong — but the visual benefit of the premium is smaller.
Rose gold settings: Similar to yellow gold, rose gold’s warm pink tone makes GH-color stones appear more neutral. DEF in rose gold is beautiful, but the color grade difference between DEF and GH is less perceptible in this setting than in white metals.
How GRA Certifies Color
GRA (Gemological Research Association) color grading for moissanite uses a masterset of comparison stones graded to known color standards. The moissanite being graded is compared to the masterset under standardized lighting (typically cool fluorescent light) and viewing conditions (stone face-down, viewed through the pavilion).

DEF vs. GH: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
The honest answer depends on your setting and priorities:
- White gold or platinum setting — buy DEF. The color difference is visible in these metals, and the premium is worthwhile for a piece worn daily for decades.
- Yellow or rose gold setting — DEF is still the premium choice, but GH performs beautifully and the cost saving is real. Either is defensible.
- Budget is a significant constraint — GH in yellow or rose gold delivers excellent value. The stone will look beautiful; the color difference is not dramatic in warm metal settings.
