How to Explain Moissanite to a Jeweler Who Doesn't Know It

When bringing your moissanite ring to a jeweler for any service — resizing, prong repair, cleaning, or inspection — share these facts upfront:

"This is moissanite, not diamond." Be direct and clear. Moissanite requires the same care as diamond for most services, but the jeweler should know what they are working with.

"The stone is silicon carbide with a Mohs hardness of 9.25." This tells the jeweler the stone is very hard and durable — comparable to diamond for most practical purposes. It will not scratch from normal tools or handling.

"It is doubly refractive." Under a loupe, the jeweler will see doubling of the facet edges. This is normal for moissanite and not a defect. If they are not familiar with moissanite, they may be confused by this. Letting them know in advance prevents unnecessary concern.

"It will read as diamond on a standard thermal tester." If the jeweler tests the stone with a standard diamond tester, it will read as diamond. Only a specialized moissanite/diamond tester (which tests electrical conductivity) will distinguish between the two. This is normal and expected.
