The Certificate Number — Your Stone's Unique Identity
The most important field on any GRA certificate is the certificate number — a unique alphanumeric code that identifies your specific stone. This number is laser-inscribed on the stone's girdle (the thin edge between the crown and pavilion) and is verifiable on the GRA's online database.
What to look for: The certificate number is typically displayed prominently at the top of the certificate. It may be labeled "Certificate No.," "Report No.," or "GRA No." It should be a unique combination of letters and numbers.
How to verify: Go to the GRA's official website and enter the certificate number in the verification field. The database should return the stone's grades, confirming that the certificate is genuine and that the grades match what's printed on the certificate.
Red flag: If the certificate number doesn't return a result in the GRA database, or if the grades returned don't match the certificate, the certificate may be fraudulent. Contact the seller immediately.
Stone Identity — Confirming It's Moissanite
The certificate will identify the stone's species — typically listed as "Moissanite" or "Silicon Carbide (SiC)." This field confirms that the stone is genuine moissanite, not cubic zirconia, white sapphire, or any other simulant.
What to look for: The stone identity field should clearly state "Moissanite" or "Silicon Carbide." Some certificates may also note that the stone is "lab-created" or "synthetic" — this is accurate and expected. All moissanite is lab-created.
Red flag: If the stone identity field is vague, missing, or uses terminology you don't recognize, ask the seller for clarification before accepting the certificate as valid.
Carat Weight — The Stone's Mass
The carat weight field documents the stone's mass in carats (ct). One carat equals 0.2 grams. Moissanite is slightly lighter than diamond — a moissanite stone of the same physical dimensions as a 1 carat diamond will weigh approximately 0.88 carats.
Important distinction: Many moissanite sellers describe their stones in "diamond equivalent weight" (DEW) — the carat weight of a diamond with the same physical dimensions. A stone described as "1 carat DEW" will have an actual carat weight of approximately 0.88 carats. The GRA certificate will show the actual carat weight, not the DEW.
What to look for: Verify that the carat weight on the certificate matches what the seller described. If the seller described the stone as "1 carat DEW," the certificate should show approximately 0.88 carats actual weight.
Color Grade — The Most Important Quality Factor
The color grade is one of the most important fields on the GRA certificate. Moissanite color grades follow the same scale as diamond color grades, from D (completely colorless) to Z (strongly colored). The GRA groups moissanite color grades into tiers:
DEF — Colorless: The highest quality tier. Stones in this range are completely colorless in any lighting condition, any metal, any setting. This is the grade you want for a lifetime piece. Every Moissanite Shine stone is DEF color.
GH — Near-Colorless: Stones in this range may show a slight yellow or gray tint in certain lighting conditions, particularly in white gold or platinum settings. The tint is most visible in natural daylight and in photographs.

Clarity Grade — Internal Perfection
The clarity grade documents the stone's internal characteristics — the presence or absence of inclusions (internal features) and blemishes (surface features). The GRA clarity scale for moissanite follows the same structure as the diamond clarity scale:
VVS1 — Very Very Slightly Included 1: The highest clarity grade available in moissanite. Inclusions are extremely difficult to see even under 10x magnification and completely invisible to the naked eye. This is the grade you want.
VVS2 — Very Very Slightly Included 2: Inclusions are very difficult to see under 10x magnification and invisible to the naked eye. An excellent grade, though slightly below VVS1.

Cut Grade — The Brilliance Factor
The cut grade documents the quality of the stone's cutting — how well the facets are aligned, how accurately the proportions match ideal parameters, and how effectively the stone interacts with light. The GRA cut scale for moissanite typically uses:
Excellent: The highest cut grade. The stone's proportions, symmetry, and polish are all at the highest level. Maximum brilliance and fire.
Very Good: A high-quality cut with minor deviations from ideal proportions. Excellent brilliance with minor compromises.
Good: A competent cut with some deviations from ideal proportions. Good brilliance but noticeably less than Excellent.

Shape and Dimensions — Physical Specifications
The certificate will document the stone's shape (round brilliant, oval, cushion, pear, emerald, etc.) and its physical dimensions in millimeters. For a round brilliant, this will be the diameter and depth. For fancy shapes, this will be the length, width, and depth.
What to look for: Verify that the shape matches the ring you ordered. The dimensions should correspond to the carat weight — a 1 carat DEW round brilliant moissanite should have a diameter of approximately 6.5mm.
Polish and Symmetry — The Finishing Details
Many GRA certificates include separate grades for polish (the quality of the stone's surface finish) and symmetry (the precision of the facet alignment). These are typically graded on the same scale as cut: Excellent, Very Good, Good.
What to look for: Both polish and symmetry should be "Excellent" or "Very Good" for a premium moissanite stone. Lower grades in either category can affect the stone's brilliance and fire.
The Girdle Inscription — Connecting Stone to Certificate
The certificate number is laser-inscribed on the stone's girdle — the thin edge between the crown (top) and pavilion (bottom) of the stone. This inscription connects the physical stone to its certificate, making it impossible to swap a lower-quality stone into a certified setting.
How to verify: Use a 10x loupe (jeweler's magnifying glass) to examine the girdle of the stone. The certificate number should be visible as a tiny laser inscription. If you can't see it with a loupe, ask a jeweler to verify it for you.
What to Do If Something Doesn't Match
