How to Read a GRA Certificate: A Step-by-Step Guide for Moissanite Buyers

Every Moissanite Shine stone comes with a GRA (Gemological Research Association) certificate — a document that independently verifies the stone's color grade, clarity grade, cut, and other quality characteristics. But many buyers receive their certificate and aren't sure how to read it. This step-by-step guide explains every field on a GRA certificate, how to verify its authenticity online, and what to look for to confirm you've received the stone you paid for.

What Is the GRA?

The Gemological Research Association (GRA) is an independent gemological laboratory that specializes in the grading and certification of moissanite and other lab-created gemstones. GRA certificates are widely recognized in the moissanite industry as a reliable, independent verification of a stone's quality characteristics. Unlike some in-house grading systems, GRA grading is performed by independent gemologists using standardized grading criteria.

The GRA Certificate: Field by Field

1. Certificate Number: A unique identifier for this specific certificate. This number can be used to verify the certificate's authenticity on the GRA website. Every legitimate GRA certificate has a unique number — if two certificates share the same number, one is fraudulent.
2. Date of Issue: The date the certificate was issued. This should be a recent date — certificates issued years before your purchase may indicate the stone has been re-sold or the certificate has been reused.
3. Shape and Cutting Style: The shape of the stone (Round Brilliant, Oval, Cushion, Pear, Emerald, etc.) and the cutting style (Brilliant, Step, Mixed). Verify this matches the stone you received.
4. Measurements: The stone's dimensions in millimeters (length x width x depth). These measurements allow you to verify the stone's size and calculate its approximate carat weight. A 6.5mm round moissanite, for example, is approximately 1.0 carat equivalent.
5. Carat Weight: The stone's actual weight in carats. Note that moissanite is slightly lighter than diamond (lower density), so a moissanite of the same visual size as a diamond will weigh slightly less.
6. Color Grade: The stone's color grade on the GRA scale. For moissanite, the highest grades are D, E, and F (collectively called "DEF" or "colorless"). G, H, and I are "near-colorless." All Moissanite Shine stones are DEF color — the highest grade available.
7. Clarity Grade: The stone's clarity grade. VVS1 (Very Very Slightly Included 1) is the highest clarity grade for moissanite — inclusions are extremely difficult to see even under 10x magnification. All Moissanite Shine stones are VVS1 clarity.
8. Cut Grade: The quality of the stone's cut, which determines how well it reflects and refracts light. Excellent cut is the highest grade. Cut quality is the most important factor in a stone's brilliance.
9. Polish: The quality of the stone's surface finish. Excellent polish means the surface is smooth and free of polishing marks.
10. Symmetry: The precision of the stone's facet arrangement. Excellent symmetry means the facets are precisely aligned for maximum light performance.
11. Fluorescence: Whether the stone fluoresces under UV light, and the color and intensity of fluorescence. Most moissanite has none to faint fluorescence.
12. Comments: Any additional observations by the grading gemologist. This field may note the presence of needle inclusions (a normal characteristic of moissanite) or other observations.

How to Verify Your GRA Certificate Online

Every legitimate GRA certificate can be verified on the GRA website using the certificate number. To verify:
1. Locate the certificate number on your GRA certificate
2. Visit the GRA verification portal
3. Enter the certificate number
4. Confirm that the stone characteristics on the website match those on your physical certificate
