Moissanite 4Cs Equivalent: Color, Clarity, Cut & Carat Explained

When a diamond buyer evaluates a stone, they use the 4Cs framework — Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat weight — developed by the GIA as the standard language of gemstone quality. This framework applies directly to moissanite, with specific adaptations that reflect silicon carbide's unique optical and physical properties.

The First C: Color

Color in gemstone grading refers to the presence or absence of tint. The GIA diamond D–Z scale is condensed into three practical moissanite grades:

  • DEF — Colorless: Equivalent to D, E, or F on the GIA diamond scale. No discernible color to the naked eye. All Moissanite Shine stones are DEF colorless.
  • GHI — Near-Colorless: Faint warmth detectable only under controlled grading conditions. In real-world settings — especially yellow or rose gold — visually indistinguishable from DEF.
  • JKL+ — Faint Color: Visible warmth without magnification. Not used in Moissanite Shine products.

Moissanite-specific note: silicon carbide's double refraction can create a slight grayish or greenish appearance under fluorescent lighting even in high-color-grade stones. This is a material property, not a grading defect — minimized by DEF color and Excellent cut. Read more: Moissanite Color Grades: DEF vs. GHI.

The Second C: Clarity

Clarity evaluates internal inclusions and surface blemishes. The scale adapted from GIA diamond grading:

  • FL / IF: No inclusions under 10x magnification. Extremely rare in moissanite; practically identical in appearance to VVS1.
  • VVS1 / VVS2: Inclusions extremely difficult to detect under 10x magnification. Completely invisible to the naked eye. All Moissanite Shine stones are VVS1.
  • VS1 / VS2: Inclusions difficult to detect under magnification, invisible to the naked eye. Excellent for everyday wear.
  • SI and below: Inclusions visible under magnification; potentially visible to the naked eye. Not used in Moissanite Shine products.

Practical note: any stone VS1 or above is eye-clean. The VVS1 upgrade is a quality standard guarantee, not a visible appearance difference. Read more: Moissanite Clarity: VVS1 Explained.

The Third C: Cut

Cut is the most impactful of the 4Cs for optical performance. It is a craft variable — determined by the cutter's precision, not the raw crystal's properties. Cut grading evaluates three dimensions:

  • Cut grade (proportions and angles): Mathematical precision of facet angles that maximize light return. Scale: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. All Moissanite Shine stones: Excellent.
  • Polish: Surface finish quality of each facet. Excellent polish means smooth facets free of micro-abrasions.
  • Symmetry: Precision of facet placement and geometric regularity. All Moissanite Shine stones: Excellent symmetry.

Why cut matters most in moissanite: moissanite's refractive index (2.65–2.69) is higher than diamond's (2.42), making it more sensitive to cut quality. An Excellent cut moissanite delivers maximum optical performance; a poor cut wastes silicon carbide's inherent optical advantages. Read more: Moissanite Cut Quality Guide.

The Fourth C: Carat Weight

Carat is a unit of weight: 1 carat = 0.2 grams. Moissanite requires a specific adjustment: its specific gravity (3.21) is lower than diamond's (3.52), meaning a moissanite stone of the same physical dimensions as a 1-carat diamond weighs approximately 0.88–0.90 carats. The face-up size is identical; the weight is less.

This is why moissanite is sold in Diamond Equivalent Weight (DEW) — the weight of a diamond with the same physical dimensions. "1 carat moissanite" means 1 carat DEW, not 1 carat of actual silicon carbide weight. For buying purposes, use millimeter dimensions as your primary size reference: 6.5mm round = 1ct DEW, 7.5mm = 1.5ct DEW, 8mm = 2ct DEW. Read more: Moissanite Size Guide.

How the 4Cs Work Together

The hierarchy of importance for visual impact: Cut > Color > Clarity > Carat.

  • Always choose Excellent cut — a larger stone in lower cut will appear less brilliant than a smaller Excellent-cut stone.
  • DEF color for white metal settings; GHI acceptable for yellow or rose gold.
  • VVS1 or VS1 are both eye-clean — the upgrade is a quality standard, not a visible difference.
  • Choose carat (size) based on aesthetic and budget goals after optimizing the first three Cs.
