What Is Birefringence?

Is Moissanite Birefringent?
Yes. Moissanite is a birefringent material. Its two refractive indices are approximately 2.648 and 2.691 (for the ordinary and extraordinary rays respectively), giving it a birefringence value of approximately 0.043.
For context, diamond is not birefringent (it is isotropic — light travels at the same speed in all directions). This is one of the ways gemologists distinguish moissanite from diamond under a loupe.
Does Birefringence Affect How Moissanite Looks to the Eye?
This is the question that actually matters for buyers. The honest answer: not meaningfully, in a well-cut stone viewed with the naked eye.
Moissanite's birefringence of 0.043 is the same order of magnitude as peridot (0.036), tourmaline (0.018–0.021), and zircon (0.059) — all gemstones sold and worn without any concern about their double refraction affecting beauty.
The doubled facet edges that birefringence can produce are visible under 10x loupe magnification when you know what to look for and view the stone through the table in specific orientations. To the naked eye, in a mounted stone in normal viewing conditions, the effect is not visible and does not affect the stone's perceived brilliance or beauty.
Where birefringence has sometimes been overstated as a concern: early moissanite (pre-2010 era) had more visible optical effects in some lighting conditions. Modern moissanite cutting has been optimized to minimize any visible impact of birefringence, and current stones from quality manufacturers do not show this as a visible issue in normal wear.
How Cutters Manage Birefringence
Moissanite cutters orient the stone's crystal axis deliberately during the cutting process to minimize the visual impact of birefringence. This is standard practice in modern moissanite production. A well-cut DEF/VVS1 moissanite from a reputable manufacturer will have its crystal axis oriented so that birefringence effects are minimized when the stone is viewed from standard face-up positions.

Moissanite's high dispersion (0.104, higher than diamond's 0.044) is the source of its strong fire, and this is a feature, not a side effect of birefringence.
