Moissanite Certification Guide: GIA vs. GRA vs. IGI Explained

Moissanite Certification Guide: GIA vs. GRA vs. IGI Explained - Moissanite Shine

When you buy a moissanite stone and receive a certificate, that certificate is only as meaningful as the laboratory that issued it. Understanding the difference between GIA, GRA, and IGI — and knowing which one actually certifies moissanite — is essential knowledge for any moissanite buyer.

GIA: The Diamond Standard

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the most recognized gemological laboratory in the world and the creator of the 4Cs grading system for diamonds. GIA grades natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds. GIA does not issue grading reports for moissanite. Moissanite is not a GIA-graded product. If you encounter a seller claiming their moissanite is "GIA certified," this is either a misunderstanding or a misrepresentation. GIA has issued a limited number of identification reports (not grading reports) for moissanite confirming the stone’s identity, but these are rare and not the same as a GIA diamond grading report. The absence of a GIA certificate for moissanite is not a flaw — it reflects the fact that GIA focuses on diamond grading, not the moissanite category.

GRA: The Moissanite Standard

GRA (Gemological Research Association) is the primary certification laboratory for moissanite globally and the standard used by reputable moissanite retailers including Moissanite Shine. A GRA certificate for a moissanite stone specifies: stone identity (confirmed as moissanite / silicon carbide), color grade (DEF = colorless; GHI = near-colorless), clarity grade (VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2), cut grade, shape, measurements (length × width × depth in mm), and a unique certificate number. The GRA certificate is the moissanite industry’s equivalent of the GIA diamond grading report — it is the document that independently verifies the stone’s stated grades. A seller who cannot provide a GRA certificate (or equivalent from a recognized moissanite lab) is selling uncertified stones. See our GRA certificate guide.

IGI: The Lab Diamond Certifier

IGI (International Gemological Institute) is a major laboratory that grades both natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds. IGI has become the dominant certification body for lab-grown diamonds, particularly in the US and European markets. IGI does not issue standard grading reports for moissanite. Like GIA, IGI focuses on diamond grading. A lab-grown diamond with IGI certification is a different product category from moissanite — both are lab-created, but chemically and optically different stones. An IGI-certified lab-grown diamond is carbon (the same material as a natural diamond). A GRA-certified moissanite is silicon carbide. The certificate reflects the stone’s actual identity and material.

What the Certificate Actually Tells You

A GRA moissanite certificate independently verifies four things: (1) Identity — the stone is confirmed as moissanite, not glass, CZ, or another simulant. (2) Color grade — DEF colorless is the highest grade; the certificate confirms the stone meets this standard independently of the seller’s claim. (3) Clarity grade — VVS1 means very very slightly included (essentially eye-clean and nearly loupe-clean); the certificate confirms this grade independently. (4) Cut — the stone’s shape and proportions are recorded. Without a certificate, none of these grades can be independently verified — you are trusting the seller’s claim without independent confirmation.

How to Verify Your GRA Certificate

Every GRA certificate has a unique certificate number. To verify: visit the GRA verification system (available at the GRA website), enter your certificate number, and confirm that the stone details match your physical certificate. A certificate that cannot be verified in the GRA system is not an authentic GRA certificate. Moissanite Shine provides GRA certificates with every stone purchase. See our verification guide.

Certificate vs. Appraisal

A gemological certificate and a jewelry appraisal are different documents. A certificate (GRA, GIA, IGI) is issued by a gemological laboratory and grades the stone’s properties. An appraisal is issued by a certified appraiser and assigns a replacement value for insurance purposes. Both are useful and serve different functions. For moissanite, obtain a GRA certificate for the stone and an independent appraisal for insurance coverage. See our appraisal guide and insurance guide.

Summary: Which Certificate to Look For

Buying moissanite? Look for GRA certification. It is the industry standard, independently verifiable, and the document that confirms your stone’s color, clarity, and identity.
Buying a lab-grown diamond? Look for IGI or GIA certification — these are the standards for that category.
No certificate offered? The stone’s stated grades cannot be independently verified. Require certification before purchasing.
