Moissanite Crystal Size Limits: Why You Can't Get a 10ct Stone

Moissanite Crystal Size Limits: Why You Can't Get a 10ct Stone - Moissanite Shine

Buyers sometimes ask why moissanite isn’t available in very large sizes — 10ct, 15ct, 20ct — the way some lab-grown diamonds or colored stones are. The answer is rooted in the physics and economics of silicon carbide crystal growth, not a manufacturing limitation that is about to be solved. Understanding this gives you a clearer picture of what to expect when shopping for larger moissanite stones.

How Moissanite Crystals Are Grown

Commercial moissanite is grown using a high-temperature crystal growth process based on the physical vapor transport (PVT) method — a refined descendant of the original Lely process developed in the 1950s. In PVT growth, silicon carbide source material is sublimated (converted directly from solid to vapor) at temperatures above 2,000°C and deposited onto a seed crystal in a controlled atmosphere. The crystal grows slowly — typically at rates measured in millimeters per hour — over periods of days to weeks, eventually forming a large SiC boule (cylindrical crystal ingot). This boule is then sliced, and gemstone-quality sections are identified, cut, and polished into finished stones.

Why Size Is Limited: The Physics of SiC Growth

Growing a large, defect-free SiC crystal is significantly more difficult than growing a large diamond via CVD. Several physical constraints apply: 1. Thermal stress and cracking: As SiC crystals grow larger, thermal gradients within the boule increase. These temperature differences create internal stress that can cause the crystal to crack along growth boundaries. Larger boules have higher internal stress and higher defect rates, meaning the proportion of gem-quality material decreases as boule size increases. 2. Polytype stability: Moissanite used in jewelry is grown as a specific polytype (typically 6H-SiC or 4H-SiC — see our polytype guide). Maintaining polytype consistency across a large crystal is technically challenging. Larger crystals are more likely to develop polytype inclusions or transitions that degrade optical quality. 3. Growth rate limitations: SiC grows significantly slower than CVD diamond under comparable conditions. Longer growth times increase costs and the probability of defect accumulation over the growth period. 4. Colorless quality requirements: DEF (colorless) moissanite requires very precise control of growth conditions to suppress nitrogen and other impurities that cause color. Maintaining these conditions consistently across a larger boule is more difficult than across a smaller one.

What Size Range Is Realistically Available?

Commercial gemstone-quality moissanite is reliably available in sizes up to approximately 6.5ct equivalent (roughly 12mm round). Beyond this, availability drops sharply and quality consistency becomes less reliable. The most common commercial range — where supply is consistent and quality is high — is 0.5ct to 3ct equivalent (approximately 5mm to 9.5mm round). Very large stones (5ct+) are available from some suppliers but at premium prices and with longer lead times, reflecting the lower yield of large-format gem-quality material from the growth process. For comparison, lab-grown diamonds via CVD can be produced at 10ct+ sizes with reasonable yield because diamond’s cubic crystal structure is easier to grow defect-free at large scales than SiC’s hexagonal structure.

Carat Weight vs. Millimeter Size: An Important Distinction

Because moissanite has a lower specific gravity than diamond (3.21 vs. 3.51 g/cm³), moissanite’s actual carat weight is approximately 8.5% lower than a diamond of the same millimeter dimensions. When moissanite sellers list “2ct equivalent” or “diamond equivalent weight (DEW),” they are referring to the size of a diamond that would match the moissanite’s millimeter dimensions — not the moissanite’s actual weight. A “2ct equivalent” moissanite weighs approximately 1.83 actual carats. This distinction matters when reading size limits: a “6ct equivalent” moissanite actually weighs approximately 5.5 actual carats. See our specific gravity guide.

What This Means for Buyers

For buyers considering larger center stones: - Up to 3ct equivalent (round ~9.5mm): Wide availability, consistent quality, standard pricing. This range covers the vast majority of engagement ring purchases. - 3ct to 5ct equivalent: Available but more limited. Expect longer lead times for custom orders and slightly higher per-carat pricing. - Above 5ct equivalent: Specialty supply. Quality consistency is less guaranteed; verify certification before purchase. - Above ~6.5ct equivalent: Extremely limited availability from most suppliers. If a seller offers uncertified large moissanite stones at unusually low prices in this range, verify authenticity carefully. For most buyers, the practical size range of moissanite — up to 3ct equivalent — covers every realistic engagement ring and jewelry need, and the size limitations do not impose meaningful constraints on typical purchases.
