When people describe moissanite as "brilliant," they are using a word with a precise optical meaning. Brilliance is the return of white light from a gemstone to the viewer’s eye. It is determined primarily by the refractive index of the stone and the precision of its cut. Moissanite’s refractive index exceeds diamond’s. This guide explains what that means and why it matters.
What Is Refractive Index?
Refractive index (RI) measures how much a material slows and bends light as it passes through it. When light enters a gemstone, it slows down and changes direction — this bending is refraction. The higher the refractive index, the more light is bent, the more internal reflection occurs, and the more light is returned to the viewer’s eye as brilliance. RI is measured as a ratio: the speed of light in a vacuum divided by the speed of light in the material. A material with RI 2.0 slows light to half its vacuum speed.
Moissanite vs. Diamond: The Numbers
Diamond: RI 2.417 (single refractive)
Moissanite: RI 2.65–2.69 (double refractive)
Sapphire: RI 1.762–1.770
Ruby: RI 1.762–1.770
Cubic Zirconia: RI 2.15–2.18
Moissanite’s refractive index of 2.65–2.69 is higher than diamond’s 2.417. This means more light is bent and returned inside moissanite than in diamond, producing greater brilliance — more white light returned to the eye per unit of stone face. This is not a matter of opinion or marketing; it is a measurable optical property.
Double Refraction
Moissanite is doubly refractive (birefringent) — it splits light into two rays as it enters the stone, each traveling at a slightly different speed and in a slightly different direction. Diamond is singly refractive — it does not split light. Double refraction in moissanite produces a characteristic optical effect: when looking through a moissanite at a sharp edge (such as the back facets), the edge appears doubled. This is visible under magnification and is one of the methods gemologists use to identify moissanite from diamond. In normal wearing conditions, this doubling effect is not visible to the eye — it does not reduce the beauty of the stone. What the eye sees is the cumulative brilliance of the doubled light paths returning from the stone simultaneously. See our dispersion and fire guide.
Brilliance vs. Fire: The Distinction
Brilliance is the return of white light — governed by refractive index and cut. Fire is the dispersion of white light into spectral colors (the rainbow flashes) — governed by a separate optical property called dispersion. Moissanite exceeds diamond in both: RI 2.65–2.69 (vs. diamond’s 2.417) for brilliance, and dispersion 0.104 (vs. diamond’s 0.044) for fire. The combination — more white light and more colored light returned simultaneously — is what produces moissanite’s distinctive visual effect: intense, multidimensional light performance that is immediately apparent in any lighting condition. See our fire guide.
Cut Quality and RI: The Relationship
A high refractive index is the material’s potential for brilliance; cut quality is what realizes that potential. A poorly cut stone with high RI will not deliver its full brilliance potential — light that enters at the wrong angle leaks out the base rather than returning to the eye. Moissanite Shine’s DEF/VVS1 moissanite stones are cut to ideal proportions that maximize the light return from the material’s high RI — table percentage, crown angle, pavilion angle, and girdle thickness are all optimized for the specific optical properties of silicon carbide. See our cut grades guide.
What This Means for the Stone You Wear
A DEF/VVS1 moissanite in an ideal cut, set in 14K or 18K gold, delivers more white light return than a diamond of equivalent size and cut quality. In low light — candlelight, restaurant lighting, evening events — moissanite’s high RI produces brilliance that a diamond of equivalent size cannot match. In bright daylight, the combination of high RI and high dispersion makes a moissanite ring visually spectacular at any viewing distance. This is not a compromise or a substitution — it is a stone with objectively superior light performance in the two properties that matter most to the human eye.
