Moissanite is one of the hardest gemstones in the world — but hardness and toughness are different properties. Here's the honest answer about what happens when a moissanite ring takes a hard impact.
Hardness vs. Toughness: The Key Distinction
Hardness measures resistance to scratching. Moissanite scores 9.25 on the Mohs scale — it will not be scratched by any common material except diamond. This is excellent.
Toughness measures resistance to breaking or chipping from impact. Moissanite has good toughness — better than many gemstones, but not as tough as some others. A sufficiently hard, direct impact at the right angle can chip or crack any gemstone, including moissanite and diamond.
What Actually Happens in a Hard Impact
Most impacts: nothing. The vast majority of hard knocks — hitting a countertop, dropping the ring, bumping against a hard surface — will cause no damage to the moissanite stone. The stone is genuinely durable for daily wear.
Severe impacts at vulnerable angles: possible chipping. The most vulnerable point on any faceted gemstone is the girdle (the thin edge around the middle of the stone) and the culet (the bottom point). A direct, hard impact at these points can chip the stone. This is rare in normal wear but possible in extreme situations.

How Does Moissanite Compare to Diamond for Impact?
Diamond has a Mohs hardness of 10 but is actually more brittle than moissanite in some directions due to its crystal structure. Diamond can chip from a hard impact, particularly at the girdle or culet. Moissanite's toughness is comparable to diamond — neither is indestructible, but both are highly resistant to everyday impacts.
What to Do After a Hard Impact
If your ring takes a hard hit, inspect it carefully under good lighting — ideally with a loupe or magnifying glass. Look for:
• Chips or cracks on the stone surface or edges
• Loose or bent prongs
• Distortion in the band or setting
• Any change in how the stone sits in the setting
If you notice any of these, stop wearing the ring and take it to a jeweler for inspection. If the stone appears undamaged and the setting is intact, the ring is likely fine to continue wearing.
Settings That Offer Better Impact Protection
If you're concerned about impact damage — particularly if you work with your hands or have an active lifestyle — consider a setting that protects the stone:
Bezel setting: The stone is fully surrounded by a metal rim. Maximum protection from impact. The metal absorbs and deflects impacts that would otherwise reach the stone.
Channel setting: Stones are set flush within the band, protected on both sides by metal walls.
Flush/burnish setting: The stone sits level with the metal surface, fully protected.
