Ring sizing is one of the most stressful parts of planning a surprise proposal. You want the ring to fit perfectly when you present it — but asking your partner their ring size will immediately reveal that a proposal is coming. This guide gives you 7 proven methods for finding your partner's ring size without spoiling the surprise, and explains exactly what to do if the ring doesn't fit perfectly after the proposal.
Why Ring Sizing Matters
A ring that doesn't fit can't be worn — and a ring that can't be worn immediately after the proposal is a practical problem that can overshadow the emotional moment. Getting the size right (or close to right) before the proposal is worth the effort.
The good news: our free resizing policy means that even if the ring doesn't fit perfectly, we'll resize it at no charge within 30 days of purchase. The proposal moment doesn't need to be perfect — the ring can be adjusted afterward.
7 Proven Methods for Finding Your Partner's Ring Size
Method 1: Borrow a Ring (Most Accurate)
If your partner wears rings on their left ring finger, borrow one of those rings and bring it to a jeweler to have it sized. This is the most accurate method. Choose a ring that fits the left ring finger specifically — different fingers have different sizes, and the left ring finger is typically slightly smaller than the right ring finger.
To borrow the ring without raising suspicion: wait until your partner is asleep or in the shower, borrow the ring briefly, trace its inner circumference on paper, and return it before they notice. Bring the paper tracing to a jeweler for sizing.
Method 2: Ask a Trusted Friend or Family Member
A close friend or family member who knows your partner well may know their ring size or be able to find out discreetly. Ask them to find out the ring size under the pretense of a different gift — "I'm thinking of getting her a ring for her birthday, do you know her size?"
Method 3: The Sleeping Partner Method
If your partner is a sound sleeper, you can gently place a ring sizer (a set of graduated metal rings available at most jewelry stores) on their ring finger while they sleep to determine their size. This requires care and a light touch — but it is surprisingly effective.
Method 4: The String Method
Wrap a thin strip of paper or string around your partner's ring finger while they're asleep or distracted. Mark where the paper or string overlaps, then measure the length. Use a ring size chart to convert the measurement to a ring size.
Method 5: Estimate from Hand Size
If you can't get an accurate measurement, estimate based on hand size and body type:
Average US women's ring size: 6–6.5
Small hands / petite build: size 4.5–5.5
Average hands / average build: size 6–6.5
Larger hands / athletic build: size 7–8
When in doubt, size up rather than down — it's easier to size a ring down than up, and a ring that is slightly too large can be worn temporarily while it's being resized.
Method 6: Ask Directly (With a Cover Story)
Ask your partner their ring size under the pretense of a different gift: "I'm thinking of getting you a ring for your birthday — what size are you?" This is the most reliable method, but it may raise suspicion if your partner is perceptive.
Method 7: Order a Resizable Ring and Resize After the Proposal
Order a ring in the most likely size (typically 6–6.5 for women) and plan to resize it after the proposal. Present the ring at the proposal, explain that you'll have it resized to fit perfectly, and schedule the resizing immediately after. This approach removes the sizing pressure from the proposal planning entirely.
What to Do If the Ring Doesn't Fit
If the ring doesn't fit perfectly after the proposal, don't worry — this is extremely common and completely fixable. Here's what to do:
If the ring is too small: Don't force it onto the finger. Have it resized before wearing it regularly.
If the ring is too large: The ring can be worn temporarily on a different finger or with a ring size adjuster (a small plastic insert that reduces the ring's interior diameter) while it's being resized.
Contact us immediately: Contact Moissanite Shine within 30 days of purchase to arrange free resizing. We'll resize the ring and return it promptly.
Our Free Resizing Policy
We offer free resizing within 30 days of purchase. The ring must be in its original condition (not engraved, not damaged). We cover the cost of resizing and return shipping for the first resize. Most rings can be resized 1–2 sizes in each direction, depending on the style.
Note: Eternity bands and rings with stones all the way around the band cannot be resized. If you're planning a surprise proposal, choose a ring style that can be resized — a simple solitaire, halo, or pavé shoulder setting is the safest choice.
