Synthetic sapphire is aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) — the same chemical composition as natural sapphire, grown in a lab using the Verneuil (flame fusion) or Czochralski process. It is chemically and physically identical to natural sapphire. "Synthetic" in gemological terms means lab-created, not fake — the stone is real corundum, just not mined from the earth.

Colorless synthetic sapphire (sometimes called "white sapphire") has been used as a diamond and moissanite alternative. It is genuinely hard (9 Mohs), completely colorless, and significantly less expensive than natural sapphire.

What Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is silicon carbide (SiC) — a naturally occurring mineral first discovered in 1893 inside a meteorite crater. It has a Mohs hardness of 9.25 and a refractive index of 2.65–2.69 — higher than both diamond and sapphire.
