Wedding Day Jewelry Timeline: When to Put On Each Piece

Wedding Day Jewelry Timeline: When to Put On Each Piece - Moissanite Shine

Your wedding day moves fast. Having a clear plan for when each piece of jewelry goes on — and in what order — prevents last-minute scrambling, protects your hair and dress, and ensures every piece is captured in your getting-ready photographs. Here is the complete timeline.

The Night Before: Preparation

Lay out every piece of jewelry in the order you will put it on. Photograph the complete set together for your records (insurance documentation and to confirm nothing is missing). Clean every piece. Moissanite benefits from a quick clean before the wedding day — a soft brush, warm water, and a drop of dish soap removes any oil or product residue accumulated during the engagement period. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. See our care guide. Confirm all closures work. Test every earring back, clasp, and bracelet closure the night before. Replace any stiff or uncertain closures before the wedding morning. Pack a small jewelry emergency kit: A spare earring back, a small polishing cloth, and a ring dish or small labeled pouch for each piece.

Morning: Getting Ready (3–4 Hours Before Ceremony)

Do NOT put on any jewelry yet. Hair and makeup come first. Products, heat tools, and styling sprays can damage jewelry, tarnish settings, and coat stones with residue that dulls their brilliance. Keep all jewelry in its pouch or box until hair and makeup are fully complete. Exception: Small stud earrings that will be covered by hair can go in early if they are completely out of the way of styling tools. But confirm with your hair stylist first.

After Hair and Makeup: Jewelry On (60–90 Minutes Before Ceremony)

Put jewelry on in this order to minimize risk to hair and dress: 1. Earrings first. Earrings go on before the dress and before any necklace. Putting on a necklace with earrings already in risks catching the chain on an earring. Putting earrings on after the dress risks the earring back catching on fabric. 2. Necklace second. Have your maid of honor clasp the necklace from behind. Do this before the dress goes on if the necklace is delicate — pulling a necklace over a dressed head risks catching on hair or the dress’s neckline embellishment. 3. Bracelet third. Put on the bracelet after the dress is on and zipped. Bracelets can catch on dress fabric during the dressing process. 4. Hair jewelry fourth. Hair pins and combs go in after earrings and necklace are on, as part of the final hair check. Your hair stylist typically handles this. 5. Rings last. The engagement ring and wedding band go on last — after the dress, after all other jewelry, and after any final touch-ups. This prevents rings from catching on dress fabric during dressing and keeps them clean through the rest of the preparation process.

The Ring Exchange: A Special Note

Many brides move their engagement ring to their right hand before the ceremony so the wedding band can be placed on the left ring finger first during the exchange. After the ceremony, the engagement ring moves back to the left hand, on top of the wedding band. Decide in advance which hand your engagement ring will be on during the ceremony and brief your maid of honor — she may need to hold it or remind you at the right moment.

During the Ceremony

Your jewelry should require no attention during the ceremony. If you’ve done the pre-ceremony checks correctly (all closures secure, pieces comfortable), everything stays in place. Resist the urge to touch or adjust jewelry during the ceremony — it appears in photographs and video.

Reception: What to Remove (and What to Keep On)

Keep on: Wedding band, engagement ring, earrings, necklace. These are your primary pieces and stay on for the full reception. Consider removing: - Hair jewelry (pins and combs) can be removed after formal portraits if they become uncomfortable during dancing - A statement bracelet can come off during dinner if it catches on tablecloths or interferes with eating - Remove any piece that is causing discomfort — place it in the labeled pouch immediately Assign a keeper: Designate your maid of honor or a trusted family member to hold any pieces you remove during the reception. Do not leave fine jewelry unattended on tables.

End of Night: Safe Storage

At the end of the reception, remove and store all jewelry before any post-wedding celebrations or travel. Each piece back in its individual pouch or box. Engagement ring and wedding band together in the ring box. GRA certificates and insurance documents stored separately from the jewelry (a fireproof box or safe at home, not in the same bag as the jewelry during travel).
