Moissanite is highly impact-resistant, but no gemstone is completely immune to damage from a hard enough impact. Here is the honest, science-backed answer about what happens when moissanite gets hit, and what to do afterward.
Moissanite's Impact Resistance: The Science
Hardness and toughness are two different properties in gemology:
Hardness (Mohs scale) measures resistance to scratching. Moissanite scores 9.25 — extremely hard, second only to diamond.
Toughness measures resistance to breaking or chipping from impact. Moissanite has "good" to "excellent" toughness — significantly better than many popular gemstones like emerald (poor toughness) or tanzanite (poor toughness), and comparable to sapphire and ruby.
In practical terms: moissanite can withstand the impacts of daily life — accidental knocks against countertops, doorframes, and hard surfaces — without chipping or breaking. It is one of the most durable gemstones available for everyday jewelry wear.
When Can Moissanite Chip?
Moissanite can chip under extreme impact — a very hard, direct blow at the right angle, particularly at the stone's edges (the girdle) or at pointed tips (in cuts like marquise, pear, or princess). The conditions required to chip a moissanite are significantly more extreme than normal daily wear.
Round brilliant moissanite is the most impact-resistant cut because it has no sharp points or thin edges. Fancy cuts with pointed tips (marquise, pear, heart) are slightly more vulnerable at those points and benefit from protective settings (V-prongs or bezel tips at the points).
What About the Setting?
In most impact scenarios, the setting is more vulnerable than the stone. A hard knock can bend prongs, deform a thin band, or loosen the stone in its setting — even if the stone itself is undamaged. After any significant impact, inspect your ring carefully for:
— Prongs that appear bent or misaligned
— Any movement or wobble in the stone
— Visible damage to the band
If you notice any of these, take your ring to a jeweler for inspection before wearing it further. For guidance on checking prongs, see: How Do I Know If My Moissanite Prongs Are Loose?
What to Do After a Hard Impact
1. Inspect the stone carefully under good light for any chips, cracks, or surface damage.
2. Check the prongs for bending or misalignment.
3. Gently press the stone from the side — it should not move.
4. If you notice any damage or movement, take the ring to a jeweler immediately.
5. If everything looks fine, continue wearing normally but monitor the ring over the next few days.
