How Much Can a Ring Be Resized?

The range of resizing depends on the ring's design:

Simple solitaire or plain band: Can typically be resized 2–3 sizes up or down without structural compromise. Going up requires adding metal; going down requires removing metal and re-soldering.

Pavé or eternity band (stones all the way around): More limited resizing range — typically 1–1.5 sizes in either direction. Full eternity bands are the most difficult to resize because stones run the entire circumference. Some full eternity bands cannot be resized at all without removing and re-setting stones.

Halo or complex settings: Can usually be resized 1–2 sizes, but the complexity of the setting increases the skill required and the cost.

Going Up vs. Going Down

Going up (making larger): The jeweler cuts the band, inserts a piece of matching metal, and solders it together. The seam is then polished smooth. For solid gold rings, the added metal matches the original alloy. For plated rings, the new metal section will need to be re-plated to match.

Going down (making smaller): The jeweler removes a section of the band and re-solders the ends together. This is generally simpler than going up and leaves less visible evidence of the resize.

What About Plated Rings?

Resizing a plated ring is more complex than resizing a solid gold ring. The heat from soldering can affect the plating in the area being worked. After resizing, the ring typically needs to be re-plated to restore a uniform appearance. A jeweler experienced with plated jewelry can handle this, but it adds cost and complexity. For buyers who anticipate needing resizing, solid gold is the more practical choice.

Resizing costs vary by jeweler, location, and the complexity of the ring:

• Simple resize (1–2 sizes, plain band): $20–$60
