How to Tell If a Moissanite Ring Is Good Quality Before You Buy

Not all moissanite is created equal — and the difference between a high-quality moissanite and a low-quality one is visible to the naked eye. Here's exactly what to check before you buy.

1. Check the Color Grade

Moissanite color is graded similarly to diamonds: DEF (colorless), GH (near-colorless), IJ (slightly tinted), and lower. The difference between DEF and GH is visible — especially in white gold or platinum settings where a warm tint in the stone is more apparent.

2. Verify the GRA Certificate

A GRA (Gemological Research Association) certificate is the standard certification for moissanite quality. It confirms the stone's color grade, clarity grade, carat weight, and cut. A reputable seller provides a GRA certificate with every stone.

3. Check the Clarity Grade

High-quality moissanite is VVS1 or VVS2 clarity — meaning inclusions are not visible to the naked eye and barely visible under 10x magnification. Lower clarity grades (VS, SI) may have inclusions visible under magnification or, in lower grades, to the naked eye.

4. Evaluate the Cut Quality

Cut quality determines how well the stone returns light. A poorly cut moissanite — even with excellent color and clarity — will look dull compared to a well-cut stone. Look for:

• Symmetrical facets with no visible misalignment
• A bright, even sparkle pattern with no "dead zones" (dark areas)
• A table (top facet) that is centered and proportionate

5. Evaluate the Setting Quality

The stone is only part of the ring. The setting quality matters for both aesthetics and stone security. Check:

• Prong tips: are they rounded and even, or sharp and uneven?
• Metal finish: is it smooth and consistent, or rough with visible tool marks?
• Stone security: does the stone sit level and secure in the setting?
• Metal type: is it solid gold, plated silver, or something else? Know what you're buying.

6. Check the Seller's Credibility

A reputable moissanite seller will: provide GRA certificates, specify color and clarity grades, offer video of stones, have a clear return policy, and have verifiable customer reviews.
