Moissanite Specific Gravity & Density Explained: The Science of Weight and Feel - Moissanite Shine

Brilliance, fire, hardness — these are the properties most buyers think about. But specific gravity is equally fundamental. It is how gemologists have identified stones for centuries, it determines why moissanite feels the way it does on your hand, and it explains the critical difference between moissanite and its most common imitation. This is the complete gemology guide to moissanite density.

What Is Specific Gravity?

Specific gravity (SG) is a dimensionless number expressing a material's density as a multiple of water's density (1.0 g/cm³). A material with SG 3.21 is 3.21 times denser than water. Unlike color or cut, SG is a fixed intrinsic property of a mineral's atomic structure — it cannot be altered by coatings, treatments, or imitation. Every genuine silicon carbide moissanite sample measures SG 3.21, always. This constancy is what makes it so valuable for identification.

Moissanite's SG: 3.21 — What the Number Means

Moissanite is silicon carbide (SiC) arranged in a 6H hexagonal polytypic lattice. The precise stacking of silicon and carbon atoms in this structure — lightweight elements bonded in a tight covalent network — produces the SG of 3.21. The same lattice structure that gives moissanite its SG of 3.21 also produces its refractive index of 2.65–2.69, its 9.25 Mohs hardness, and its double refraction. These are not coincidences; they are all consequences of the same underlying crystal architecture. See our silicon carbide science guide and our birefringence guide.

SG Compared: Moissanite vs. Diamond vs. CZ vs. All Alternatives

Gemstone Chemical Formula Specific Gravity vs. Moissanite
Moissanite SiC 3.21 —
Diamond C 3.52 +9.7%
White Topaz Al₂SiO₄(F,OH)₂ 3.53 +10.0%
White Sapphire Al₂O₃ 4.00 +24.6%
Cubic Zirconia ZrO₂ 5.60–6.00 +74 to +87%
Morganite Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ 2.71–2.90 −10 to −16%
Quartz SiO₂ 2.65 −21%

The most consequential comparison is moissanite vs. cubic zirconia. CZ's SG of 5.60–6.00 is nearly double moissanite's — a zirconia ring of the same apparent size is dramatically heavier. This is one reason why buyers who switch from CZ to moissanite immediately notice the difference in hand feel. CZ's high density is also one of the fastest gemological disqualifiers when identifying stones. See our moissanite vs. CZ guide.

How Gemologists Measure Specific Gravity

Hydrostatic Weighing (Archimedes Method)

The classical method for loose stones: weigh in air (W₁), then suspended fully in water (W₂). Calculate: SG = W₁ ÷ (W₁ − W₂). The weight loss in water equals the weight of water displaced, which reveals volume, which yields density. Accurate to ±0.01 SG units with a precision balance.

Heavy Liquid Method

Immerse the stone in a liquid of known density. If the stone sinks, its SG is higher than the liquid; if it floats, lower; if it hovers, equal. This method is fast for approximate field identification but has safety considerations with the liquids involved.

For Mounted Stones

Hydrostatic weighing cannot be used for stones set in metal rings — the metal confounds the measurement. Gemologists use refractive index measurement, spectroscopy, and thermal/electrical conductivity testing instead. See our diamond tester guide and refractive index guide.

SG and Diamond Equivalent Weight (DEW): What Buyers Need to Know

The gemological carat is a unit of mass (1 ct = 0.2 g), not size. Because moissanite (SG 3.21) is less dense than diamond (SG 3.52), a moissanite stone at a given physical diameter weighs approximately 8.9% less than a diamond of the same dimensions.

A 6.5mm round moissanite — visually identical in size to a 1.00 ct diamond — has a true mass of approximately 0.88 ct. To avoid buyer confusion, moissanite is sold using Diamond Equivalent Weight (DEW), which describes the physical size in diamond-carat terms rather than true mass.

Round Diameter Diamond Carat Moissanite True Mass Moissanite DEW
4.1mm 0.25 ct ~0.22 ct 0.25 ct DEW
5.0mm 0.50 ct ~0.44 ct 0.50 ct DEW
6.5mm 1.00 ct ~0.88 ct 1.00 ct DEW
8.0mm 2.00 ct ~1.76 ct 2.00 ct DEW
9.4mm 3.00 ct ~2.64 ct 3.00 ct DEW
10.5mm 4.00 ct ~3.52 ct 4.00 ct DEW

What SG 3.21 Means for How Your Ring Feels

The practical hand-feel difference between moissanite and diamond is subtle — approximately 10% lighter for the same physical stone. Most buyers do not perceive this consciously in daily wear. However, two comparisons are perceptible:

  • Moissanite vs. CZ: Switching from CZ to moissanite produces a noticeable reduction in ring weight — CZ's SG of 5.60–6.00 makes a same-size CZ ring roughly 70–87% heavier. Most buyers experience this as improved comfort in long daily wear.
  • Large stones (3ct+): At very large carat equivalents, moissanite's lower density becomes more perceptible in hand weight compared to diamond, which some buyers consider an advantage of moissanite in larger sizes.

The Full Gemological Fingerprint: SG + RI + Hardness

No single property identifies a stone definitively. Combined, SG, refractive index, and Mohs hardness create a unique fingerprint:

Stone SG Refractive Index Mohs Hardness Birefringence
Moissanite 3.21 2.65–2.69 9.25 Yes (0.043)
Diamond 3.52 2.42 10 No
CZ 5.60–6.00 2.15–2.18 8.0–8.5 No
White Sapphire 4.00 1.76–1.78 9.0 Yes (0.008)

Moissanite's combination of low SG (3.21), very high RI (2.65–2.69), strong birefringence, and 9.25 hardness is unique among all gemstones — no other stone shares all four values. Related science guides: refractive index · birefringence · hardness · thermal conductivity.
