One of the most common questions we receive from customers who are considering their first moissanite purchase goes something like this: "I love the ring, but I'm not sure I want to start with a plated setting. Should I wait until I can afford solid gold?" It's a reasonable question, and it deserves a direct answer.
The answer is: you don't have to choose between starting now and starting right. Our Lifetime Upgrade Program is designed specifically for this situation — allowing you to begin with a beautiful plated setting today and upgrade to solid gold or platinum whenever you're ready, with the full value of your original purchase applied toward the upgrade. This guide explains exactly how that journey works.
Why Start with a Plated Setting?
Platinum-plated and gold-plated silver settings are not compromise settings. They are beautiful, well-made pieces that look extraordinary and perform well for daily wear. The plating is applied over sterling silver at a thickness that provides genuine durability — most plated settings maintain their appearance for 1–3 years of daily wear before re-plating becomes desirable, and re-plating is a routine and inexpensive service that any jeweler can perform.
Starting with a plated setting makes sense for several reasons:
- It lets you wear the stone now. The moissanite stone — the part that matters most optically — is identical whether it's set in plated silver or solid platinum. Starting with a plated setting means you get to wear your stone today, not in two years when you've saved enough for solid gold.
- It lets you confirm your style preferences. Wearing a ring daily for a year or two gives you real information about what you love and what you'd change. Many customers discover that they want a slightly different setting style, a different stone shape, or a different metal tone when they upgrade — and the upgrade process accommodates all of these changes.
- It's financially rational. The value of your plated setting purchase is fully applied toward your upgrade. You're not throwing money away by starting with plated — you're making a phased investment in the piece you ultimately want.
How the Lifetime Upgrade Program Works
Step 1: Make Your Initial Purchase
Purchase any Moissanite Shine piece — ring, earrings, necklace, or bracelet — in any setting. Your purchase is recorded in our system and associated with your account. The full purchase price of your original piece is your upgrade credit.
Step 2: Wear and Enjoy Your Piece
Wear your piece. Love it. Let it become part of your daily life. There is no time limit on the upgrade — you can upgrade after six months or after six years. The upgrade credit doesn't expire.
Step 3: Choose Your Upgrade
When you're ready to upgrade, contact our team through our custom design service to discuss your options. You can upgrade to:
- A larger stone in the same setting style
- The same stone in a more elaborate setting
- A solid gold setting (9K, 14K, or 18K in yellow, white, or rose gold)
- A platinum setting
- A completely different piece, with the upgrade credit applied toward the new purchase
Step 4: Apply Your Credit
The full purchase price of your original piece is applied as a credit toward your upgrade. If your upgrade costs more than your credit, you pay only the difference. If your upgrade costs less than your credit, the remaining credit is applied toward a future purchase.
Step 5: Receive Your Upgraded Piece
Your upgraded piece goes through the same quality control process as every other Moissanite Shine piece — stone verification, setting inspection, final inspection, and premium packaging. It arrives with a new GRA certificate (if the stone has changed) and updated documentation of your Lifetime Gemstone Warranty.
What Changes in an Upgrade — and What Doesn't
The most important thing to understand about the upgrade process is what stays the same: the moissanite stone. If you're upgrading the setting only — moving from plated silver to solid gold, for example — your original stone is removed from the plated setting and reset into the new solid gold setting. The stone you chose, the stone you've been wearing, the stone that has been part of your life — that stone continues in its new home.
This continuity is meaningful. The stone carries the history of the piece — the day it was given, the occasions it was worn, the years it has been part of your life. Upgrading the setting doesn't erase that history. It gives the stone a more permanent home.
The Solid Gold Difference
Solid gold settings are significantly more durable than plated settings. Where a plated setting may need re-plating every 1–3 years, a solid gold setting maintains its appearance for decades of daily wear with minimal maintenance. Prongs may need re-tipping every 5–10 years, and the band may show wear that requires polishing, but the structural integrity of a solid gold setting is essentially permanent.
Solid gold also has a different feel — a weight and warmth that plated silver doesn't replicate. Many customers who upgrade to solid gold describe the experience as the ring finally feeling "complete" — as though the stone has found the setting it was always meant to be in.
We offer solid gold upgrades in 9K, 14K, and 18K yellow, white, and rose gold, as well as platinum. Each metal has its own character and its own relationship to the D-color moissanite stone. Our design team can help you choose the metal that best suits your aesthetic and your lifestyle.
The Upgrade as a Milestone
Many of our customers time their upgrade to coincide with a significant milestone — a first anniversary, a fifth anniversary, a professional achievement, a significant birthday. The upgrade becomes a second gift — a renewal of the original commitment, expressed in a more permanent material.
This is one of the most meaningful aspects of the Lifetime Upgrade Program: it creates a jewelry story that unfolds over time, with each chapter marked by a piece that reflects where you are in your life at that moment. The plated ring you wore when you were starting out. The solid gold ring you upgraded to when you'd built something worth celebrating. The platinum setting you chose for your tenth anniversary. Each piece is part of the same story, and the stone — permanent, brilliant, unchanged — is the thread that runs through all of it.
