White topaz at 8.0 Mohs is harder than most common materials but softer than moissanite by a meaningful margin. The practical consequence is the same as with cubic zirconia: materials harder than white topaz (common dust particles contain quartz at 7.0 Mohs; harder minerals are present in many everyday surfaces) can scratch white topaz's surface over time. Daily ring wear exposes the stone to these abrasive contacts continuously, and white topaz will accumulate surface micro-scratches that progressively reduce its optical clarity and surface luster.

Cleavage means the crystal has a plane along which it will split cleanly under mechanical stress — similar to how mica separates into sheets.
